Jons family started surfing around the mid 1930's on the far north coast of NSW. They started building their own hollow wood surfboards and skis, and surfed from Byron Bay to Greemount. The Surf Lifesaving Association was a huge part of family life. Jon himself started learning the craft of shaping, glassing, sanding and polishing within the surfing industry at the age of 14, working for icons like Ray Woosley, Neal Purchase Snr, Don Burford, Peter Turner and Richard Harvey. He became a close friend of Michael Peterson, who taught Jon the craft of shaping and the importance of finds which was a competitive edge to Michael's surfing at the time. At age 23, Jon and Mandy took on the job of supplying the industry with screen printed decals.
